A case involving sexual abuse and rape on a minor, a fifteen year old local girl, has surfaced adding more to the list of recent cases.

Maldives Police Service confirms they received the report of a 15 year old victim of sexual abuse and rape from a central atoll of the country.

Reports now clarify a team of officers arrived at the island around Wednesday dawn, to initiate investigation.

Cases involving sexual abuse or rape against children have alarmingly increased in the recent months; the number of lodged cases coming in almost every week.

In January, a case of two 14 year old minor victims of sexual abuse were reported to the local law enforcement as well.

Sexual abuse and rape cases against children have become visibly increased in the number of lodged complaints, which sparked after the case of a two year old infant becoming a victim of sexual abuse by her father, grandfather and great grandfather shook the island nation.

The case led to a widespread public outrage with several members of the public urging to give capital punishment to the perpetrators.

The infamous case also put the then Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Shidhatha Shareef in hot water for gross negligence and incompetency.

Members of the Parliament, following the incident, had filed a no-confidence motion against the cabinet member. She tendered her resignation not too long after the no-confidence motion, which was confirmed by the Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
