The Maldives Police Service has cracked down on an illicit drug trafficking network, making a bust of 9 kilograms of narcotic substances and MVR4 million in cash.
Local law enforcement reports they apprehended the culprits of the drug trade ring following reports to Drug Intelligence Unit of the Maldives Police.
Following intelligence reports, Maldives Police initiated a major crackdown on drug networks by raiding several Male' City residences through court orders.
The police operation witnessed local law enforcement officers searching 5 residences in Male' City on 31 January, and 4 more residences on previous Thursday, 06 February 2020.
In addition to this, Maldives Police had searched a motorbike in relation to the drug trade network.
Police confirms a total of 8 locals were apprehended during the operation, making several busts on illicit narcotic substances and monies.
The crackdown led to Maldives Police consficating over 9 kilograms of drugs, and a total of MVR1,522,785 and USD173,831 (approximately MVR2,680,474).
Meanwhile, the Drug Enforcement Department (DED) is investigating the case.
