The Maldives Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Shidhatha Shareef has resigned from her cabinet responsibilities.

Her resignation was confirmed by the island nation's President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih through his Twitter handle.

Confirming that he received the resignation of the now outgoing Gender Minister sometime today, thanking her for her service.

President Solih in his tweet had also announced Shareef's replacement; Aishath Mohamed Didi who is presently the Maldives Ambassador in New Delhi.

Outgoing Gender Minister Shidhatha Shareef fell into widespread criticism following consecutive cases of sexual abuse against children started surfacing, with the one particular case involving a 2 year old victim.

The case had public going out to the streets in angry protests, with many demanding accountability of Shareef as the minister responsible with the authority mandated to protect and preserve children's rights.

Following several sexual abuse and rape cases against minors, the Maldives public become assertively vocal about their demands for answers from authorities with several addressing for immediate resignation of Shareef.
