The Maldives has reported over 5,000 tourist booking cancellations in light of the coronavirus outbreak from China.

According to Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed, so far more than 5,000 guest bookings to the island nation has been cancelled while the ministry is assessing economical setbacks due to this.

Earlier, on Wednesday, 29 January it was reported that over 2,000 guest bookings were cancelled.

Ministry of Tourism confirmed that from the preliminary cancellation figure, over 1,400 bookings were from Chinese travelers.

During a press conference on Wednesday, the Minister of Tourism asserted the health and wellbeing of the citizens remain top priority for the government.
