Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Wednesday announced the government's decision to increase the salaries of local councilors.

With the local council elections drawing close, Maldives head of state announced the councilors who will be getting newly elected following the scheduled elections will receive their remunration based on the announced increment.

While speaking during the inauguration of the 'Thiladhunmathi Iruvai' conference, President Solih asserted the concerns and complaints of local councilors regarding their salaries were evaluated and assessed.

Moreover, President Solih ensured the increment to salaries have been sent to Maldives Parliament for reviewing.

Maldives President announced under the new increment, City Mayors will receive MVR40,000 per month and Deputy Mayors will receive MVR35,000.

Other changes to councilor remuneration includes;

  • City Council Members - MVR30,000 per month
  • Atoll Council President - MVR28,000 per month
  • Island Council President - MVR23,000 per month
  • Deputies of Atoll and Island Council - MVR15,000 per month
  • Council Members - MVR12,000 per month

Although Maldives President announced the increment, he did not disclose any further details.

During Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration City Mayors received MVR18,000 per month and Deputy Mayors received MVR14,000 - which were salary reductions from the previous administration.

Under Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration salaries of City Council members were sliced to MVR11,500.
