The opposition coalition has urged the immediate resignation of two of the current government's cabinet ministers.
The opposition - primarily consisting of former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom's sympathizers - had called for the resignation of Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla and Commissioner of Prisons Abdulla Munaz.
The anti-government movement claims the current state has failed in proper governance of the country. They had also lambasted the state's inability to solve civil matters and public interest affairs.
Moreover, opposition had criticized Commissioner of Prisons Munaz for his alleged inaction in ensuring safety and ethical conduct of local prisons.
In a press statement the opposition had strongly condemned the Maafushi Prison riot on Sunday which resulted in apparent beatdown of prisoners by local penitentiary officers and Police Service.
The anti-government agency had thus condemned the inhuman conduct by local law enforcement.
The press statement by the opposition further noted that the violent altercation at Maafushi Prison violates several international conventions on prisoner safety as well as the Human Rights Act.
Meanwhile, they had also shared concerns over the safety of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom who is serving a five year jail term in Maafushi Penitentiary.
