The Elections Commission of the Maldives (EC) has decided to allocate at least 2 seats for women, at the Kulhudhufushi City Council in the upcoming local elections.
EC’s Vice President and Chief Spokesperson Ahmed Akram said on Tuesday that the City Council will be comprised of seven members including, a mayor and six councilors.
As per the Amendments to the Decentralization Act, seven councilors will be elected for the constituencies that have a population of 10,000 to 30,000.
The population of Kulhudhufushi is about 10,000 and was about to boycott the upcoming local elections since their status was not upgraded.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced the upgrading of Kulhudhufushi Island to a City status during this week only.
In the upcoming council election, there will be four cities including Kulhudhufushi.
Capital Male’ City holds a population of over 60,000 and Addu City which has a population between 30,000-60,000; while Fuvahmulah City holds a population of 10,000-30,000 people.
